Do you wanna see how well your site rates? YES YOU DO! Well easy-squeezy!
Why It’s Important To See How Well Your Site Is Doing
I’ve used the Website Grader website to analyze my blog’s (https://supermunk.wordpress.com) marketing effectiveness and ranking in the search engines. Why? Because it’s idiotic to build a website or blog and let it go for months & months, thinking it’s still ‘doing ok’. That’s like never exercising and thinking your body still looks as good as it did 5yrs ago. Well it doesn’t fatty!
And in the world of SEO and social media, there is always competition from newer, bigger, more popular sites. Because information and trafffic are two constantly changing variables. Know that information gets searched and indexed every damn day so oopsie; that website you haven’t touched in weeks is stagnating real fast!
Like being in highschool: The kids who are in the now, who are regularly seen and actively participate in the popular school social functions get the most press. You may not hang out with them, but you’ll remember their faces and their 1st names at least. They also get their picture in the yearbook more often. You want your blog or website to get in the ‘yearbook’ (search engines) more often too. Same with your website or blog. Being a quiet wallflower doesn’t work. Your blog won’t get asked out to the dance if it doesn’t take the active steps to get on that phone and call up some potentially interested people.
I like to think that my SuperMunk site is ‘doing ok’ but, I’m a realist and I know there is always room for pudding. And improvement.
Get Your Blog Website Rank
So you go to Website Grader’s homepage and punch in your site’s URL. For this demonstration, I’ve put in my own site as you can see:
Then it analyzes your site and pulls up stats, like so:
Website Grader Stats For SuperMunk
Here we go! I’m gonna go ahead and cut & paste the relevant parts and explain as I go along. Here’s how my site (this blog) scored:
Report for supermunk.wordpress.com
June 01, 2010 at 08:34 AM
The website supermunk.wordpress.com ranks 422,949 of the 2,458,935 websites that have been ranked so far.
A website grade of 83/100 for supermunk.wordpress.com means that of the millions of websites that have previously been evaluated, our algorithm has calculated that this site scores higher than 83% of them in terms of its marketing effectiveness.
I. Create Content
A. Blog Analysis –
Blog URL: https://supermunk.wordpress.com (Last Post: May 24, 2010)
B. Blog Grade : 24
Your Blog Grade of 24 is based on a measurement of the traffic levels to your blog and the number and quality of links pointing at it.
It’s to my understanding that a blog grade is set on different parameters than that of a regular website, which makes sense from a structural standpoint.
C. Recent Blog Articles
Lists my last 3 posts. Shows how often they were retweeted/ if they have inbound links/ if they stirred any Google Buzz.
D. Google Indexed Pages : 423
This number is the approximate number of pages on supermunk.wordpress.com that have been stored in the Google index. The Google web crawler will visit the website periodically and look for new content for its index. Generally, the more pages your site has within the Google cache, the better.
Had you activated Google Webmaster Tools (topic of next post) and set the robots to crawl your site, Google would be indexing your site and it’s content regularly. This helps bump you up in rank.
E. Readability Level : Primary / Elementary School
This score measures the approximate level of education necessary to read and understand the web page content. In most cases, the content should be made to be simple so that a majority of the target audience can understand it.
HAHA! I originally verbalized SP’s content so that anyone regardless of age, genre, or computer savvy, could understand it. I may have to step up my game here! *awkward
Metadata tags allow you to tell the search engines what your web page is about. Start a HubSpot trial today to start improving your metadata.
It lists my site’s address and whatever the meta description would be. But,
Meta Description Not Found
This page is missing a meta description. It’s important to add a meta description for every page on your site, the meta description is what frequently shows up under your page title in search results and convinces people to click-through to your site.
There’s a combination of factors that create metadata, one of which is Title. The Title shows up at the top left edge of any web browser (mine says Supermunk’s Blog) and that just doesn’t do it for the bots. For example, had my title have been SEO Queen’s Blog, Webmaster Consultants For SEO Blog, or something with relevant keywords in the title then my site would get crawled more.
B. Heading Summary
Total headings found: 46. See details.
When clicked, the details link brings down a menu full of all the headlines you applied Heading 1 or Heading 2, and so on. This is extremely important, not just graphic-wise but it’s a tremendous SEO catcher. Of course, you can’t overdo it as the search engines will realize it and penalize you.
C. Image Summary
Images are a great way to enhance a website from a user’s perspective. However, it is important to note that search engine crawlers cannot really “see” images. So, if you have lots of images that contain textual content within the image itself, this content will not be seen by the crawlers.
Total images found: 64 , 54 image(s) don’t have ALT text. See details.
Too Many Images Found.
Having many images on the web page means the user has to wait longer to view your page. This web page has 64 images.
It’s usually better to have fewer or smaller images. Sometimes simply resizing your images will make them smaller in size, and your web page will load faster.
Again, clicking on See details pulls down a menu list of all 54 images I didn’t apply Alt text (alternate text) to. That’s my fault; shoulda known better (^。^)” It really is a missed opportunity for more crawled content.
D. Interior Page Analysis : 3 Pages Processed
We looked at a few other pages on your website to see how well they are optimized. This sort of interior page analysis can reveal exciting opportunities for you to target specific keywords or visitors. You can then create landing pages optimized towards converting those visitors into customers.
It lists 3 random blogposts I made, plus it’s page description on the right. For me, the descriptions are missing. Hmm, something else to work on.
E. Domain Info
Most experts agree that you should register your domain for a long time, because search engines factor domain “stability” when looking at your pages.
Website hosted on free blog domain
To learn more about why business blogs should not be hosted on a free blog provider (wordpress.com), see this article: Why Your Business Blog Shouldn’t Be On BlogSpot.com
Of course, being that my site is hosted for free, this doesn’t even apply to me. And, it’s a major reason I’m not as high up in rank as I should be. Why? Because whoever provides the webhosting gets the credit in rank. In my case, WordPress.com.
F. MOZ Rank : 0
MozRank is SEOmoz’s general, logarithmically scaled 10-point measure of global link authority or popularity. and is very similar in purpose to the measures of link importance used by the search engines (e.g., GOOGLE’s PageRank).
I have too little inbound links (not a lotta folks linking to my site) so yea, this stalls rank progress.
G. Last Google Crawl Date : May 30, 2010 @ 12:54 AM (GMT)
Google will periodically crawl websites looking for new and updated content. In general, you want Google to crawl your site as often as possible, so your new content shows up in Google search results immediately.
H. Inbound Links : 13
One of the most important measures for a website is how many other sites link to it. The more links the better. Having links to your website from authoritative resources on the Internet helps you rank higher in search engines since these links are an indication that your website is trustworthy and contains good content.
See? This is my fault, as I have to really push myself to network with others out there. Sometimes my shyness overwhelms me but I gotta snap out of it to be successful! Pinch me!
J. Yahoo! Directory : Found
wordpress is listed in the Yahoo! Directory.
The Yahoo! Directory is a web directory which rivals the DMOZ Open Directory Project in size. We recommend that every business have a listing in the Yahoo! Directory.
Did Yahoo! think I was really cool and find me by dumb luck? Did they find me out of recommendation? No and no. I took measures to submit my site to Yahoo! so they could index my site. This you must do manually.
A. del.icio.us bookmarks : n/a
del.icio.us is a social bookmarking site. Users can save links they wish to keep for later reference on the site, and pages that have been saved many times are displayed in a special “hot” section which can drive thousands of visits.
No kidding. Again, as with Yahoo! you have to go to the del.icio.us site and manually submit yourself to their bots. I may not have used these guys, or Digg, but I know I submitted my site to Technorati. Hey, submit to all-even better!
B. Link Tweet Summary
The links on this website, supermunk.wordpress.com, have been recently tweeted 1 times according to TweetMeme.
TM does the same thing TwitPwr does, but on a larger scale. I’d say it’s the Digg of Twitter in terms of spreading your information. It would be wise to use both when tweeting new posts.
C. Twitter Grade : 89.1
Then it goes on to summarize my Rank/ Followers/ Following/ Updates. Honestly, the above response is a canned response so pay no mind. It doesn’t take genius to get that grade, just a fierce Twitter addiction. I mean, have you seen the quality of my tweets? Sheesh.
D. Google Buzz Count: 0
Google Buzz is a social networking and messaging tool from Google, designed to integrate into the company’s web-based email program, Gmail. Users can share links, photos, videos, status messages and comments organized in “conversations” and visible in the user’s inbox.
Here is your website Google Buzz Count (If no number is showing it means your website was not shared on Google Buzz yet , be the first one and share your own website)
I’ve never heard of Google Buzz ’till now. Then again, Google’s making so many apps these days it’s hard to keep up. Guess I’m gonna submit to the Buzz now.
A. RSS Feed : Found
An RSS feed was detected in this web page. The feed link was correctly setup so that it can be auto-detected by feed readers and contemporary browsers. The feed URL for this site is https://supermunk.wordpress.com/feed/.
Very early on, I added an RSS feed to my blog so whoever subscribed to my blog could see whenever I added a new post. Currently I use Feedburner but that might change in the future.
B. Conversion Form : Found
We found at least one web form on your website.
Anything that anyone has to sign up for or subscribe to counts as a Conversion Form.
A. Traffic Rank : Top 4.637 %
Alexa is an online service that measures traffic for millions of sites on the Internet in a similar way to Nielsen television show ratings.
Your website has an Alexa rank of 1,442,074 which is in the top 4.637 % of all websites.
Honestly, my Alexa/ SEO Moz/ Google Page Rank isn’t gonna change much until I get 2 things: My own domain name, and paid webhosting. However, when I started this blog in Autumn of 2008, I had an Alexa ranking of 4 million so, things are improving slowly.
B. Score Summary
|Google Indexed Pages||423|
And that’s all folks.
And In Summation
WG allows you to bookmark your report for future reference, so that’s helpful to contrast & compare how you rate now vs. later on.
If you read that orange bar at the very top, it says Demo and Free Trial. The makers of WG, Hubspot, have designed and sell their own SEO software package. The free trial is for the curious.
At the end of the report, Website Grader offers a FREE internet kit and live website optimization. These services are also FREE.
